Fish Oil for Fitness and Health

You may know by now that there are good fats and bad fats. There are fats to avoid and fats to include in your diet for your health. Good fats-essential fatty acids should be included in your daily diet.

Essential fatty acids are divided into two families: omega-6 EFAs and omega-3 EFAS. Omega-3 EFAs. Omega-6 EFAs can be found in vegetable oils while omega-3 EFAs can be found in fish oils among other foods.

Omega-6 vs. Omega-3


Many scientists and physicians believe the imbalance in our intake of Omega 6 and Omega 3's are the cause of many diseases and illness.

Omega-6 EFAs are found in vegetable oils. This includes oils like corn oil and soy oil, both of which contains high amounts of linoleic acid. Omega-3 EFAs on the other hand are found in marine plankton and walnut oil and flaxseed oils.

In the early 1970’s, a study on Greenland Eskimos have revealed that one of the main reasons they rarely suffer from heart diseases can be attributed to their high-fat diet, mainly fish. As you can see all fats are not created equally.

The two essential fatty acids, EPA and DHA, may also aid in preventing heart attacks, atherosclerosis, depression and various forms of cancer. Fish oil supplemented food have also proven to be useful in illnesses like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, Raynaud’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
